amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium 250 mg-125 mg-125 mg-125Athens

Common Brand Name(s): Augmentin

How it works

Augmentin is a combination of clavulanic acid and amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. The clavulanic acid prevents the bacteria from producing beta-lactamase. When a patient's beta-lactamase gene is inherited through a background mutation, amoxicillin is not effective.

To get the best results from amoxicillin, clavulanic acid must be administered in accordance with the prescribing guideline. The guidelines are as follows:

Augmentin can be administered with or without food. Take the pill at least 1 hour before breakfast. Take the tablet at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew or crush the tablet. The dose is determined based on your response. Do not change your dose without medical help.

To be clear: clavulanic acid does not cure infections; however, it can prevent further growth of the bacteria, and it is important to take amoxicillin with food. The dosage may vary depending on the patient's age, weight, and the severity of the infection.

Once the amoxicillin is stopped, it will be effective against infections of the lungs, tonsils, nasal sinuses, skin, vaginal, and urinary tract. The treatment is based on your current infection and symptoms. If you do not have your current infection, your doctor may prescribe a different antibiotic.

The patient's symptoms may include fever, chills, sore throat, cough, wheezing, sore tongue, and difficulty swallowing.

Before taking amoxicillin, it is important to inform your doctor if you have ever had:

Heart problems; such as a recent heart attack, stroke, or irregular heartbeat; a severe heart failure; heart disease that is past a recent heart attack, including a recent heart attack or stroke; any kidney or liver disease; any liver disease; or a deformed penis. If you have a history of blood disorders or a family history of blood disorders, you may be advised against taking amoxicillin. If you have anemia (low red cells or iron), you may be advised against taking amoxicillin. If you have had a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure within the past 12 hours, you should use a blood thinning medication such as trimethoprim or sulfonamide. You should not stop taking amoxicillin suddenly, and discontinue every time you have a heart attack or stroke.

If you have a bleeding disorder and are taking methotrexate (a cancer treatment), you may be advised against taking amoxicillin. If you have kidney or liver disease, you should not use amoxicillin. If you are a woman, you should not take amoxicillin. If you are a man, you may be advised against taking amoxicillin. Your doctor will decide if you should be given amoxicillin in addition to your current regimen of antibiotics.

If you are taking methotrexate, your doctor will tell you what to take.

What happens

After finishing treatment, the patient will have a general check-up and possible laboratory tests. Your doctor will tell you if you have:

Symptoms of an allergic reaction such as trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; severe dizziness, fainting, or seizures; severe skin rash or hives on the skin; trouble speaking or swallowing; trouble walking or standing still; swelling of your hands, ankles, or feet; or any other sign of pain, redness, swelling, or tenderness in your lower legs. If you notice these symptoms or if you have unexplained redness or swelling in your hands or feet, call your doctor. Do not stop taking amoxicillin without consulting your doctor.

Side effects

Side effects that may occur with the use of amoxicillin may be:

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or discomfort. Other less common side effects may include itching, rashes, fever, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or dark urine. If you notice any of these, contact your doctor immediately.
